Fishing Report

Reports based on information from area guides.

July 4th

LAKE WINNIPESAUKEE and surrounding lakes:

Fishing has really slowed for salmon on the big lakes. Average catch rates have dropped off as the water temps have gone up. Expect this to continue until the thermocline is set up, this will likely occur in another 10 days or so. Most action reported has been at first light or on cloudy days. Salmon are being caught from 25-51 feet down off of downriggers using small topguns, needlefish and db's. Some rainbows are being taken early morning off of lead core lines with long mono leaders (100ft) and a small streamer fly such as a glacier fly or marvel.

The Hex hatch (hexagenia-giant mayfly) is going strong on Lake Winnipesaukee as well as many of the trout ponds. This is a hatch that starts at dusk and runs well after dark. Look for casings that scatter the water in the morning. These insects can be 1+ inches in size and are candy for salmon and trout. Tough to compete with these naturals but if you are daring grab a fly rod and put on a large hex pattern and you just might fool one of these fish.

Lake trout are very present but sizes are running from 14-20 inches on the average. Bigger fish are reported from those jigging the ledges in 40-70 feet of water.

The lakes have received their stocking of salmon(6 inches) and anglers are urged to handle these fish carefully. The fish have a tendency to run in large schools so if you catch one it is a signal to move. These fish are the future of the fishery and mortality rates are high on the ones anglers catch and handle.

Squam lake is fishing very similar to Lake Winni but the fish are reported as being larger. Catch rates vary from 4-9 fish per trip.

Area Ponds and Streams:

Sky Pond, White's, Shaw, take your pick--they have all been stocked and action has been very good.

Rivers and streams in central and southern NH are fishing well for trout and the back country ponds have all been stocked.

Northern rivers are running very high, esp[ecially the Androscogggin and the Connecticut. Expect the action to be very good once the levels drop. These waters have not been heavily fished due to the high levels.
